Type 304l is the low carbon version of 304. Its chemical composition mechanical properties weldability and ncorrosion oxidation resistance provide the best all round performance stainless steel at relatively low cost. It is used in heavy gauge components for improved weldability. 870 c 1600 f.

Type 304 grade stainless steel is also found in sinks tabletops coffee pots refrigerators stoves utensils and other cooking appliances. Grade 304 stainless steel is the most versatile and the most widely used of all stainless steels. Type 304 is the most widely used and versatile of the stainless steel grades. 304 stainless steel has excellent resistance to a wide range of atmospheric environments and many corrosive media.

It is also known as 18 8 18 chromium 8 nickel. 304 stainless sheet offers good corrosion resistance to many chemical corrodents as well as industrial atmospheres and marine environments. It can withstand corrosion that can be caused by various chemicals found in fruits meat and milk. Type 304 stainless steel is not magnetic but may be slightly magnetic after cold working.

Maximum service temperature in air. 925 c 1700 f. It is subject to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and to stress corrosion cracking above about 60 c. 304 stainless steel sheet is the most popular and economical of the stainless steels.

This property has resulted in 304 being the dominant grade used in applications like sinks and saucepans. Sensitization occurs when type 304 austenitic stainless steel is heated between 425 and 815 c.
